Threat Density Map Modeling for Combat Simulations

    Get PDF
The modeling and simulation community has used probability threat maps and other similar approaches to address search problems and improve decision-making. Probability threat maps describe the probability of a location containing one or more enemy entities at a particular time. Although useful, they only describe the likelihood that the location is occupied without addressing the degree to which it is occupied. Thus, we investigate whether threat density maps that describe the searcherā€™s expectation of seeing a number of target agents at a certain location in a given time interval are a viable method for improving synthetic behaviors in combat simulations. As a proof of principle, this paper introduces a probability model which quantifies the searcher agentā€™s subjective belief about the number of enemy entities in a location, given the initial information described by a prior density function and the information provided by the assumed sensing model. In addition, this paper discusses a framework for initializing the model, as well as the modelā€™s key advantages and current limitations

North Sulawesi in addition to having some of the leading tourist attractions such as Bunaken Marine Park also has the attraction of alternative that still needs to be developed attractions include Lake Linouw in Tomohon. The purpose of this study was to identify appropriate development strategies in the tourist area of Lake Linouw in Tomohon, North Sulawesi. Research method was descriptive methods. Determination of the sample is based on non-probability sampling techniques. Collecting data through pre-survey, survey questionnaires, and study the literature. Data analysis has used SWOT analysis. The results showed that the tourist area of Linouw Lake at Tomohon, North Sulawesi is the growth strategies of concentration through vertical integration or the strategy of Rapid Growth Strategy (strategy of rapid growth). Therefore, it can be concluded that the main strategy to develop the tourist area of Lake Linouw be competitive position is strong and has a high tourist pull. Based on these research results, it is suggested that relevant parties should maintain tourist area Linouw Lake at Tomohon in a competitive position in the strong growth to improve tourist pull high and considering the relatively expensive tourist prices

Direct Observation of Martensitic Phase-Transformation Dynamics in Iron by 4D Single-Pulse Electron Microscopy

The in situ martensitic phase transformation of iron, a complex solid-state transition involving collective atomic displacement and interface movement, is studied in real time by means of four-dimensional (4D) electron microscopy. The iron nanofilm specimen is heated at a maximum rate of āˆ¼10^(11) K/s by a single heating pulse, and the evolution of the phase transformation from body-centered cubic to face-centered cubic crystal structure is followed by means of single-pulse, selected-area diffraction and real-space imaging. Two distinct components are revealed in the evolution of the crystal structure. The first, on the nanosecond time scale, is a direct martensitic transformation, which proceeds in regions heated into the temperature range of stability of the fcc phase, 1185āˆ’1667 K. The second, on the microsecond time scale, represents an indirect process for the hottest central zone of laser heating, where the temperature is initially above 1667 K and cooling is the rate-determining step. The mechanism of the direct transformation involves two steps, that of (barrier-crossing) nucleation on the reported nanosecond time scale, followed by a rapid grain growth typically in āˆ¼100 ps for 10 nm crystallites

Hydrogen charging in nickel and iron and its effect on their magnetic properties

    Get PDF
The current study was undertaken to explore the possibility of detecting hydrogen cavitation in magnetic materials through magnetic propertymeasurements. It is known that dissolved hydrogen in a material causes microvoids. These voids may affect the structureā€sensitive magnetic properties such as coercivity and remanence. In this study, hydrogen was introduced into nickel and iron by two processes, namely thermal charging and cathodic charging. The effect on the magnetic properties was measured. In addition, the variation of the magnetic properties with porosity was studied

IQ-Station: A Low Cost Portable Immersive Environment

The emergence of inexpensive 3D TVā€™s, affordable input and rendering hardware and open-source software has created a yeasty atmosphere for the development of low-cost immersive environments (IE). A low cost IE system, or IQ-station, fashioned from commercial off the shelf technology (COTS), coupled with a targeted immersive application can be a viable laboratory instrument for enhancing scientific workflow for exploration and analysis. The use of an IQ-station in a laboratory setting also has the potential of quickening the adoption of a more sophisticated immersive environment as a critical enabler in modern scientific and engineering workflows. Prior work in immersive environments generally required either a head mounted display (HMD) system or a large projector-based implementation both of which have limitations in terms of cost, usability, or space requirements. The solution presented here provides an alternative platform providing a reasonable immersive experience that addresses those limitations. Our work brings together the needed hardware and software to create a fully integrated immersive display and interface system that can be readily deployed in laboratories and common workspaces. By doing so, it is now feasible for immersive technologies to be included in researchersā€™ day-to-day workflows. The IQ-Station sets the stage for much wider adoption of immersive environments outside the small communities of virtual reality centers

Glycerol monolaurate prevents mucosal SIV transmission

Although there has been great progress in treating human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) infection1, preventing transmission has thus far proven an elusive goal. Indeed, recent trials of a candidate vaccine and microbicide have been disappointing, both for want of efficacy and concerns about increased rates of transmission2ā€“4. Nonetheless, studies of vaginal transmission in the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)ā€“rhesus macaque (Macacca mulatta) model point to opportunities at the earliest stages of infection in which a vaccine or microbicide might be protective, by limiting the expansion of infected founder populations at the portal of entry5,6. Here we show in this SIVā€“macaque model, that an outside-in endocervical mucosal signalling system, involving MIP-3Ī± (also known as CCL20), plasmacytoid dendritic cells and CCR5+ cell-attracting chemokines produced by these cells, in combination with the innate immune and inflammatory responses to infection in both cervix and vagina, recruits CD4+ T cells to fuel this obligate expansion. We then show that glycerol monolaurateā€”a widely used antimicrobial compound7with inhibitory activity against the production of MIP-3Ī± and other proinflammatory cytokines8ā€”can inhibit mucosal signalling and the innate and inflammatory response to HIV-1 and SIV in vitro, and in vivo it can protect rhesus macaques from acute infection despite repeated intra-vaginal exposure to high doses of SIV. This new approach, plausibly linked to interfering with innate host responses that recruit the target cells necessary to establish systemic infection, opens a promising new avenue for the development of effective interventions to blockHIV-1 mucosal transmission

Return of the Great Spaghetti Monster : Learnings from a Twelve-Year Adventure in Web Software Development

    Get PDF
The widespread adoption of the World Wide Web has fundamentally changed the landscape of software development. Only ten years ago, very few developers would write software for the Web, let alone consider using JavaScript or other web technologies for writing any serious software applications. In this paper, we reflect upon a twelve-year adventure in web development that began with the development of the Lively Kernel system at Sun Microsystems Labs in 2006. Back then, we also published some papers that identified important challenges in web-based software development based on established software engineering principles. We will revisit our earlier findings and compare the state of the art in web development today to our earlier learnings, followed by some reflections and suggestions for the road forward.Peer reviewe
